Audition pieces are available via the button on the left (or below if you're on mobile).

The auditions will be workshop format followed by scene-work individually and in groups.

Each character has two pieces apart from Mary, who has three – she’s a pivotal character who appears in most scenes. If you want to audition for this part but three pieces feels too much, please prepare the monologue and one of the group scenes.

Synopsis

The Long Road is a deeply affecting play about love, grief, hatred and ultimately, the possibility of forgiveness.

Mary and John have lost their son Danny in a senseless murder. Together with their surviving son Joe, they are each struggling to deal with the loss in their own way. For Mary, the only way to move through her hatred is to understand why it happened – and that means meeting the perpetrator, Emma, in prison.

Each character goes on a profound emotional journey, telling their story through a combination of vivid monologues and compelling dialogue. Despite its emotive themes, the play is infused with hope and laced with humour.

Beautifully written by acclaimed playwright Shelagh Stephenson, The Long Road offers five fantastic acting opportunities. I’m looking for actors who will enjoy deep-diving into emotional truthfulness to portray complex characters at a pivotal moment in their lives.

Characters

  • Mary (female, must be age appropriate to be the mother of Joe and Danny). Goes on the biggest emotional journey of all and needs to show a real range of feeling.

  • John (male, must be age appropriate to be the father of Joe and Danny). Has a lot of anger, drinks to manage his feelings, but also shows vulnerability.

  • Joe (male, Danny’s older brother, playing age 20-25). Tries to avoid his parents at first, finds the atmosphere at home difficult. Shows a bit of teenager(ish) insolence/arrogance at times.

  • Emma (female, playing age 18-25). Arrogant, rude, angry, distracted, but also deeply vulnerable and wounded. A complex character, also funny. Needs to be able to lighten the play with good comic timing.

  • Elizabeth (written as female but needn’t be gender-specific, playing age 35-50). Prison worker. Sincere, hard-working, patient. Pushed to the limit at times by Emma.
